Frequently asked questions about school visits

Open Do we have to pay to get into the museum?

No. Entry to the museum is free, but you will have to pay for some of our shows and exhibitions.

We will always tell you about any charges on our website.

Open Do I have to book in advance?

We need 1 week’s notice if you’d like to book a school show.

If you’re planning a self-guided visit, we still recommend booking in advance as we can help you plan your visit, and offer you a discount on some of our attractions.

Open Can you provide a risk assessment?

Our site is a low-risk environment and we've carried out risk assessments in all areas to ensure there are no significant hazards.

You may need a risk assessment for a specific purpose, but we can't do this for you. Nor can we send you copies of the large number of risk assessments we've carried out around our site.

The main hazards around the museum are:

  • Moving machinery - Please explain to your group the reasons for the barriers surrounding some of our exhibits.
  • Uneven surfaces - Our yards are cobbled and have railway tracks set into them, however, a network of smooth paths connects all of our buildings.
  • Ramp to lower yard - This ramp is for vehicles, and – as indicated by signs – must not be used by pedestrians.
  • Zebra crossing - You will need to use the zebra crossing on Lower Byron Street to move between the Air and Space Hall or the rest of the site.

You may find the following information useful for carrying out your own risk assessment:
